The shelter I got my dog from said he was fixed, however he got stuck together with a female dog. Can this happen with a fixed dog and a female that is unfixed and in heat?

    Yes it happens. The male is still a male, and the female is quite interested and may encourage him. Like any unsupervised mating, the female could be injured or infected. Those with selected high quality breeding stock need to keep them away from all males when they are in season except selected studs.

    Somebody else gave a good answer to a similar question too.
