I'm not interested in anything other than an ordinary 10 speed type bicycle with road tires. On a level road with no wind I can get my 32 lb Schwinn (52 teeth front 13 teeth rear) to max out at 27.9 mph. I have a $10 reward to anyone who can do 30 mph and so far no one has.

According to www.exploratorium.edu, John Howard set the record in 1985 with a speed of 152.284 mph. Edit: If this is the one I think it is (saw one on a TV special years ago), it was done at Bonneville Salt Flats, and he was behind a car to eliminate wind drag. A quick google of "bicycle speed record" returns a bunch of results to check out.

For self powered, it's not uncommon for cyclist in pro events like the Tour de France to reach speeds of up to 70 mph. This is usually on the downhill leg of a mountain.

According to my String Cheese wrapper, by Sargento brand Cheese Heads, 100% Natural String Cheese (Light, low fat version). Cheese was purchased in July 2007. It says at the bottom of the wrapper: "The fastest speed ever reached on a bicycle? 166.9 mph! Hope he was wearing a helmet!" It does not give a name or source.

127 miles an hour behind a "Air blocking vehicle" at the Bonneville salt flats. Somebody told me this had been surpassed recently - this record I use is about 20 years old.
