Soft only!!! Hard or mediums will eventually wear the enamel off of your teeth. It will remove the top layer of the enamel which is the whitest layer. Underlying layers of tooth are more yellow. If you want yellow teeth keep using the hard or mediums. The only reason that you feel like you are getting your teeth clean is the hard stimulation on your gums. It hardly takes any pressure to clean the plaque off of teeth. Putting too much pressure on the gums will cause them to recede, which is another whole problem. It causes the collagen fibers to be destroyed. When gums recede then you have your roots exposed which can be very sensitve and leaves you very vulnerable to tooth decay. Roots have no enamel on them and they decay very quickly. Also if you've ever seen anyone with very long unattractive teeth yellow teeth, its because they have gum recession. Usually the smaller the head the better. It reaches much better on the back teeth. If you like a stiffer feeling brush use a compact head with soft bristles.

Tooth brush should be soft but not supersoft. For adults the head should be full sized and for children it can be with small head. For them pedo brushes are available.
