  • Yes. They farmed in middle Georgia.
  • It's entirely possible that some of my ancestors owned slaves, but we've been unable to confirm that from existing records. Some of my ancestors lived in areas where slavery was a common practice, but most of them seemed to be too poor to own much of anything!
  • I believe so (from my search, so far), but it also appears the majority were Quakers, who did NOT own slaves, and some may have been related to the Coffins, who were the "pipeline" through Indiana for the URR.
  • My ancestors did not have the slaves that everyone thinks of when they think of slavery. My ancestors were from Norway, so if they did have any "involuntary servants" they were captured from England, or another of the European countries that is easily accessed by sea, and has a history of raids by vikings. In no way was my family, at any time in the past related in any way to the African slave trade.
  • Not that I know. But it depends on how far back you want to go. Certainly not since the 1600s. But it is just about 400 generations to get back into Neolithic times, and many people living in Central Europe (the area I live in) would be related with each other if you go back that far. and Neolithic societies (as well as the later Bronze and Iron age societies) probably had slaves. So, maybe everybody has some ancestors who had slaves (or who were slaves - but there was a lot of mixing).
  • My ancestors came over from the Old World in 1790, but they lived mostly in the north, I think. I'm not sure if they had slaves or not, but I'm sure that if you went back far enough, there isn't a family in the world that didn't own slaves of some kind at some point or another.
  • If you are referring to the African slave trade (thank you Audiotron for the wording), then no. My grandparents immigrated to the United States in 1894 and 1910 on my fathers side and in 1923 and 1926 on my mothers side.
  • No, my ancestors were peasants ousted from Canada in 1755 and eventually ended up in the swamps and bayous of south central Louisiana. They lived as subsistence farmers and trappers and couldn't afford to own slaves.
  • in 1638 the one immigrant ancestor owned a man named Jack. The Griffin's were Quackers to we did not believe in slaves or owning anyone on my paternal grandmothers side (Tedford) they owned tons. They were from the south
  • I don't know...but I feel I've apologized enough if they did!
  • nope. but i know my mom, who is from sri lanka, had domestic servants when she was growing up there. they were paid and treated well, but they definitely held a lower social status.
  • My ancestors took slaves that they captured in battle, they had to earn the right to be part of the tribe. The English and the Spanish tried to make my ancestors slaves, but it never worked for them, because it was the kind of slavery you could never rise from.
  • No,but there were a few that were indentured slaves.
  • my grandmother on my moms side grew up on a tabacco plantation so yes but they were freeded and choose to stay as paid help because of fair treatment when they were slaves ( were paid as slaves) on my dads side were lakota indians(sioux) which used white people as slaves.
  • Nope. Some of my Rrom ancestors WERE slaves though. Actually, I cannot be definitive in that because who knows where my ancestors were thousands of years ago. Maybe somewhere in time they did.
  • No. My ancestors were from Italy and were workers and shop owners.
  • No, my ancestors were mostly peasant folk from Belgium, iron workers and train conductors.
  • No but my decedents were convicts
