Question

Help answer this question below.

Is there any way to get rid of the pigeons in my backyard, but not all the other birds? The pigeons eat all of the other birds' food, and scare them away. Any suggestions?

I found these suggestions on a site:
If you can get to the spot the pigeons are roosting, spray it with WD-40. Pigeons invaded the back door over-hang at my house and I tried this tip. They landed up on it once or twice and promptly flew away. I think it's the odor they dislike. You may have to repeat the application but pigeons are re-trained easily and soon they will move on to another more appropriate area.

One person recommends a fake owl statue on the roof. Another recommends squirting them with the garden hose just as they are falling asleep in the evening. After a couple of days of this, they will leave.

But my suggestion would be to target native birds by planting the types of food trees they like and getting them to settle in the trees. In Australia, we often have trouble with feral birds, but I have found that the more native ones there are the less ferals. We have been planting a lot of native trees in our yard. These encourage the parrots and predator birds, which, in turn, gets rid of most of the pigeons. The only pigeons I see around are native wood doves or the occasional malay turtle dove, but they are solitary birds, not like pigeons. I know that some people round here have homing pigeons, but they never come over to our yard because there are parrots.

My wife shoos them away with a slingshot or clapping, but they are persistent and continue coming back. Those flying rats...
