yes it can build credit. The other thing you can do is a prepaid visa card. You usually put some money up as collateral. This is also your credit limit. YOu can charge and then pay the card. Eventually they will release your deposit to you. Be careful, the deposit is not considered part of your payment. It is only security.

It's called financial responsibility. For starters, ALWAYS pay your bills on time (CAR loan, mortgage, rent). Secondly, have a bank account with a line of credit. Thirdly, Find out your credit score. Go to AnnualCreditReport.com. The credit score with tax is $8 and change. You need 1 credit card to start. Possibly Washington Mutual could give you a credit card. Once you get a credit card, you may get a credit limit of $1000. Do not use more than 35% of the credit. No more than$350. Then pay off the bill in full. Creditors also look at how long you have been at your employment and how long you have lived at your residence.Gas card is part of the mix of cards to have. But it is not good enough. You need accounts that you had for years to build your credit history. For instance, I have a people's bank account that has been opened since 1990. But it's inactive because I don't even use. If I close it,it will hurt me because I will most likely have a shorter credit history from my other cards and then MY CREDIT SCORE WILL GO DOWN. It's a long process. Will take years! Good luck.

Walk onto any college campus (maybe not so much right now, but in like August and September for sure), and follow the signs to "free food" or "free t-shirt" etc. The catch to getting those free things is (usually) you have to fill out a form to sign up for a credit card. These cards have low limits, and high APRs, essentially designed to get college students in loads of debt, since their parents will bail them out. You'll easily get approved, and then you just have to make sure you use it responsibly!

Get a credit card with a small limit, and use it wisely. Pay it off every month, so you don't rake up lots of debt. Also, you could buy something from a rent-to-own store (like a piece of furniture or a stereo), which will help establish your credit. Make sure, when you start dealing with rent, utilities, etc, that you always pay on time, which will help you on your way to a good credit score. And, yes, the gas card will help. Just make sure, again, you pay every month, at least the minimum, but more if you can.
