  • Most jelly (sorry I'm British, I can't bring myself to use the US verion!) contains gelatin made from the hooves of various animals, more usually pigs or cattle, but occasionally horses. It is, however, perfectly possible to get jelly that uses agaragar, a seaweed derived ingredient, as a gelling agent, in place of gelatine. It tends to be slightly more expensive, but tastes just as good. Its usually labelled "Vegetarian jelly" and you'll probably be most likely to find it in health food shops. You can also buy agar agar seperately and make your own jelly.
  • Yep The gelatin you eat in Jell-O comes from the collagen in cow or pig bones, hooves, and connective tissues. To make gelatin, manufacturers grind up these various parts and pre-treat them with either a strong acid or a strong base to break down cellular structures and release proteins like collagen. After pre-treatment, the resulting mixture is boiled. During this process, the large collagen protein ends up being partially broken down, and the resulting product is called gelatin. The gelatin is easily extracted because it forms a layer on the surface of the boiling mixture. http://home.howstuffworks.com/question557.htm
  • Uh huh! Gross huh!
  • Yes, but I don't think it's limited to Jell-o brand, it's all gelatin desserts. It's not bad for you or anything, and I'm sure they don't just kill animals for Jell-o, but that's how it holds it's shape.
  • I've always heard that, but it still tastes yummy, so who cares? ;-)
  • It's essentially sweetened, flavored, and colored gelatin. Gelatin is basically processed collagen, which is a structural protein in animals' connective tissue, skin, and bones. The production of gelatin starts with the boiling of bones, skins, and hides of cows and pigs, a process that releases the protein-rich collagen from animal tissues. The collagen is boiled and filtered numerous times, dried, and ground to a powder. Because the collagen is processed extensively, the final product is not categorized as a meat or animal product by the federal government. Very strict vegetarians avoid gelatin entirely, but more permissive vegetarians have no problem including JELL-O in their diets. source- http://www.snopes.com/food/ingredient/jello.asp
  • Such an innocent snack has such cruel beginnings!
  • Gelatin comes from the hooves of many animals, not just horses hooves. It's cow hooves, and some bones.
  • gelatin comes from animal bones..ick.
  • Yes it is true it is sick and diguisting i presonaly dont balieve that they should though but it is yummy!
  • Ignorance is NOT bliss. And just because its "been done this way for a 100 yrs." doesn't make it right. (Most of us are not still using outhouses.) There are alternatives. If everyone stepped up and bombarded companies like Jell-O, they would have to at least offer the alternative. Its 2009. There is no reason to slaughter animals for any reason. Its greed, and inbred stubborness.
