It would depend on the cost, and what you get out of it emotionally, also. For some the cost is much higher. Certain situations can be too high of a cost for certain people. It's really all up to each individual and their tolerance, mostly.
"It is better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all". The same is true for BEING loved.
