  • As far as I can tell, the answer is no. Layne Staley was infamous for being non-confrontational. Though both Staley and Jerry Cantrell had other projects they were working on. Layne Staley helped form Mad Season and they released an album in 1995 titled "Above". Jerry Cantrell released albums in 1998 and 2002. Mike Inez and Sean Kinney worked on several projects in the interim period. AIC appeared on MTV's Unplugged in 1996 and Staley quiped that it was the best show AIC had done in 3 years to which the reply was that it was the only show they had done in 3 years. Layne Staley died 5 April 2002 of a heroin overdose. I'd say that was when they disbanded even though an official announcement was never made.
  • Yes, twice in fact. Once in ' 94 , Layne (As well as some of the other band members.) were on drugs and they were to do the tour with Metallica, tension arose and they disbanded. They got BACK togather in ' 95 and began Alice in Chains self titled album. Along with Mtv's Unplugged in ' 96. Following a short tour, things got heated between band members. The record company asked Jerry to sing more and Jerry told Layne he wanted to be the lead singer from now on. When Layne demanded why, Jerry replied 'Because your addicted to drugs and not fully competent.' Needless to say Layne quit the band shortly after, not for lack of work ,skill , or competence, but for the simple fact of the arguing between all the band members about the direction the band was taking.... They all couldn't agree or get along and disbanded.
  • Yeah i agree with Andy Ninja. I remember reading that in 94 they said that they were taking a break, but they never offically disbanded. And they never offically broke up after that. It was only Layne's death that ended the band.
  • I got this from Wikipedia: Although never officially disbanding, Alice in Chains was plagued by extended inactivity due to Layne Staley's problems with substance abuse, culminating in his death in 2002. Alice in Chains reunited in 2005 and as of 2008 are working on their first studio album in 14 years with new lead vocalist William DuVall. They should name the band something else but apparently they aren't going to.
