No, guns were not as prevalent as the way to "solve problems." Good communication and good parenting skills were in place instead. Also, people sometimes "copyat" crimes once they hear about them. That was the big worry about the overpublication of Columbine info. So the instances were a lot less. Still there were a few such incidents, going back to the 60s, when a sniper incident happened at a Texas college. Or perhaps even before.

I grew up in the 70s and a fight in the playground was a big deal. In my neighbourhood there was virtually no crime. Kids were free to roam the streets, even after dark. I would walk to the park at night and have no fear of anything untoward happening. Things have definitely changed. There were next to no school shootings when I was young. In a way I feel really sorry for kids growing up in today`s society.

It's not really a new thing, you just hear every fart in America because the news coverage has become nauseatingly ubiquitous.
