Yes, go ahead and remove the nail. I know it has to be very irritating having it hanging there. I have had my pinky toenail fall off numerous times and it has always grown back. Generally to stop a nail from growing a Dr. needs to apply phenol, or another agent to stop growth.

I did the same thing a few days ago and I've already cut it off but I'm keeping the toe covered to protect from injury or infection. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

hi, as a nurse, i will tell you that you can remove it yourself, it will hurt somewhat. a dr. will numb it some to remove it. but the important thing is to keep it moisturized so that the bed doesnt dry out with like neosportin ointmt. and keep it covered with nonsticking gause and pads. you can get them at any drug store..remember, clean, ointment, covered..

I had 80 percent of a toenail peel up and it came off in my hand when I touched it. It has now grown back almost fully. I think it would be best to remove it and bandage it up like the other said. Keep it clean and protected.

Ouch.....again ouch !!!! Just curious as to how this has gone for you. I did this once and they lasered two holes in my toenail and sewed it back on. But god did it hurt. Hope all went well and you healed well.

I've had many finger nails lift off, mostly from getting slammed in car doors as a kid. Also, I've had a big toenail get ripped up FROM the nail bed forward and it did grow back though q bit wrinkled as the bed was damaged. It is amazing how resilient it is. You can remove it yourself. It will be painful and the exposed area will hurt like the dickens! Be prepared. I don't want to spare you. But if you put a good antibiotic cream on it and then cover it very loosely, it will heal and grow a new one for you. It might hurt or have pressure on the whole nail area as it grows. THe edge of the new nail growing in my apply pressure to it and feel strange. There are so many nerve endings and it's sensitive. But I have every hope for you that it will grow back.

If you don't feel comfortable removing it you should see a doctor about it. Just make sure that it doesn't develop into an http://www.ingrowntoenailcure.com because that can be a bit of a nuisance

I think a doctor should look at it to make sure there is no infection -- if there is, it could have serious consequencs.

Couple years ago, I was laying in bed and turned over, smacking my big toe into the shafts along the end of the bed. Hurt like a bitch. Three days later, noticed blood in sock and so checked my nail, it lifted up away from toe and I gently pulled it away from cuticle. It grew back in 6 months..
