In the US, only Massachusetts allows same-sex marriage. A few of the others have civil unions. The technical answer to your question is 49 states don't allow it.

All except Hawaii and Massachusetts I believe, and those marriages are not valid anywhere else.

At this point in time, it is still socially unacceptable for same-sex union, especially from a religious point of view. Homosexuals and lesbians are after all a minority in a world dominated by heterosexuals. Much like left-handers were once looked down upon by the majority of right-handers but in modern times, left-handers are now considered as normal. My personal view is homosexuality has been in existence for thousand of years and it is a natural (albeit minority) occurence. Therefore, it cannot be caused by 'decadence' or 'upbringing influence' as argued by religious authorities. Perhaps sometime in the future, it will become just as acceptable to be a homosexual/lesbian. It will take a long time, though, and almost certainly not during our current generation.

Only MA permits same-gender marriages at the present time, so the other 49 US states do not. Some states allow "civil unions," which do NOT hold the same legal status and convey the 1,000+ rights as marriage.
