Could you post evidence for this, please. I find it very surprising and I feel you must have misunderstood something.

He said "some aspects of" sharia law, such as marriage or financial law. I think the BBC headline is misleading. I.e. couples when getting married could decide to have a "Western" marriage or a "Sharia" marriage. If both partners were knowingly and willingly entering into it, I see no reason why they should not do so. Bus marriage is a special case, where effectively the law of the land is entering into a private contract. Arguably, the law should have nothing to do with marriage, and every marriage should have a contract, which would then be arbitrated in the civil courts as any other contract. Sharia law should not affect those who have not voluntarily entered into it.

I am opposed to any and all religious laws (including some already operating within the UK) - the law should be the same for all, even in civil matters. Fine you could say that these courts will be subject to review by secular (if we had such a thing) courts but then why have the religious aspect at all? Keep it a level playing field for all. I know there are already religious courts operating in the UK and I would also call for these to be subject to the strongest scrutiny as a matter of urgency. I deeply fear the idea that marital disputes could be resolved by sharia courts as they have such a wonderful reputation on women's rights. Will Sharia courts allow their decisions to be overturned by a state court without much fuss? I doubt it. Also the argument that it will just be for those that choose it is a bit weak. I can forsee many thousands being forced to resolve issues within this framework due to family pressures. Terrible idea, even in the limited capacity he meant.

One set of rules for one country. The laws you follow should not be decided baced on your race,or religion, if we do this then we will be no better than we were in the dark ages.
