  • The Midwest is called such because the area used to be called the "Middle West" a section of the Northwest Territory. The term, Midwest is still used to describe the area encompassing Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The area west of the Appalachians was called the "Far West" but is now known simply as the west. The Midwest was also known as the northwest but is no longer referred to as such to differentiate it from the Pacific Northwest.
