I have a 1993 ford taurus 3.8L V6 automatic GL. I have a blown head gasket. Can you tell me if it would be best to get the gaskets replaced or get a new engine? Why does it cost so much to replace the head gaskets?What is best a new,rebuilt,or used engine

Head gaskets on these cars leads to a failed lower engine. A replacement engine may be the answer but a used one may have the same problem soon. Are you sure the car would be worth the repairs? Could you sell it for the amount you would have to get to make your money back? Chances are unless its valuable to your family, the car would not be worth the repairs. You may have some money in to it and are reluctant to part with it but it may be best to cut your losses. Hope this helps, good luck bud.

if you are able to do the head gasket installation yourself, you can save a huge amount of money. depending if the water has leaked inside your block, if you damaged your pistons, you might be looking at replacing the engine. usually the head surface must be milled, in order for the new gasket to seal properly. used engines can be purchased about $1000
