You're reading What factors have enabled cults and sects to grow in the 21st Century?

“…apathy on the behalf of the police, government agency screwups…” This seems to imply that you don't support religious freedom — that you think police and government should take an active role in deciding who may believe and practice what.

If they are cults, dam right I don't support them.

So, Painful, who gets to decide what is a cult and what isn't? This is very slippery slope that you are advocating. You start by eliminating the most radically different religions, but it can go from there to attempting to eliminating every religion that disagrees with the majority. Human history is replete with such attempts to suppress various religions. Remember, Christianity itself was once considered a cult and was ruthlessly suppress by the Romans. It is still persecuted in some countries. Once you open the door for this kind of persecution, what is to stop someone from coming along someday and declaring your religion a cult?

I am specifically talking about CULTS that are by almost anyone's common definition, out to harm people, blow up people or buildings, and generally destroy things and create chaos. I'll use this definition I found in a well respected dictionary:
"In religion and sociology, a cult is a group of people (often a new religious movement) devoted to beliefs and goals which may be contradictory to those held by the majority of society. Its marginal status may come about either due to its novel belief system or due to idiosyncratic practices that cause the surrounding culture to regard it as far outside the mainstream." That's close enough.

If the group is bent on destruction and creating chaos, then you prosecute it on the basis of this. If you prosecute strictly on the basis that the group's belief are outside of the mainstream, then you are no better than those that have in the past, and still do in the present, persecute Christians because they are not in the majority in the places and times where this occurs.

OK Bob, OK Glenn. This is not a high school or college debate class. I gave my opinion, and you both disagree, and I have adequately been rated down. I am now dropping the issue. Go on to something more productive. I am done with this. You won't change my opinion and I am sure I will not change yours.

PS: Since you both are ranked as "Brains" of course you must be right, so I humbly apologize for my naive and egregiously foolish remarks on this question.

PPS: I am sorry you both did not post a regular answer to this so we all would benefit from reading it and also have the ability to rate your personal opinions!
