These things being done, one can then "stand up" against the forces of "evil" and face adversity. These things being done, will allow one to openly proclaim and profess one's beliefs, with the knowledge that they have done right in the eyes of God. Having done "right", one would then be under the full protection of God himself. To "put on the whole armor of God", is to fully protect oneself by doing strictly as the scripture instructs. This protection is more spiritual, but can be viewed in a physical sense as well.

The unsaved person has no hope of warding off the blows of false doctrine because he is without the helmet of salvation and his mind is incapable of discerning between spiritual truth and spiritual deception. "Verse 17 interprets itself as to the meaning of the sword of the Spirit—it is the Word of God. While all the other pieces of spiritual armor are defensive in nature, the sword of the Spirit is the only offensive weapon in the armor of God. It speaks of the holiness and power of the Word of God. A greater spiritual weapon is not conceivable. In Jesus' temptations in the desert, the Word of God was always His overpowering response to Satan. What a blessing that the same Word is available to us! We cannot neglect prayer, as it is the means by which we draw spiritual strength from God. Without prayer, without reliance upon God, our efforts at spiritual warfare are empty and futile. It means you think that some imaginary being is going to magically protect you from eternal damnation. The fact of the matter is the only thing that will protect you from that is nothing. Eternal damnation is a scare tactic used to make people behave a certain way just as eternal salvation is. AS IF it was all switched from plate iron to kelvar.. <giggle>
