  • yes and no. Yes, within the last 15 years, ADD has been a major hot button diagnoses and likely a lot of that was normal kid behaviors. However, there is now evidence showing that the increased use of video games, computers and telvision has actually created a generation of ADD and ADHD kids because it wires the brain to accept short snipets of information. This is evidenced through actual brain scans. As for bi-polar disorder, there has been both an increase in legitimate cases amongst younger people and also an increase in the understanding and diagnoses of bi-polar disorder. It is estimated that up to 20% of the U.S. population may struggle with some level of bi-polarism. So, yes, the diagnoses has increased, but it has increased with awareness and education. What I do find frightening is that medication is the first and last resort. These issues will only increase exponentially unless we learn to curb their development. Less TV time, less video games, more fresh air and exercise, better diets, better discipline and establishing a daily and nightly routine (routine is essential for bi-polar) would help alot. Don't get me wrong, some people DO need meds and they should be treated accordingly. But we are an increasingly lazy generation who does not want to face the fact that we create alot of our own ills.
