Quarks make up protons and neutrons in the atom's nucleus. Like electrons, quarks have no smaller constituents -- they appear to be elementary, point-like particles. There are string theories that attempt to explain these particles as being made up of much smaller loop-like structures vibrating1 in higher dimensions, but these theories are incomplete and are not supported by physical evidence.
