  • For hard sci-fi, I love David Weber. If you can find them, H. Beam Piper had some good stuff. Anne McCaffery, Mercedes Lackey, Andre Norton, and John Ringo are good. Try going to the free library at www.baen.com and see what is there.
  • Everyone is already getting good ones. I would say, however, Robert Heinlein is my favorite. Then you have Isaac Asimov, Terry Prachett, and I cannot offhand think of more that are not mentioned already.
  • Try to find something by the Polish writer Stanislaw Lem. He wrote good sci-fi novels. He is a classic writer of this genre.
  • Octavia Butler, Tananarive Due, Steven Barnes, and Walter Mosley, Tong Enzheng, Zheng Wenguang, Ye Yonglie.
  • Matthew Reilly, especially his book "Scarecrow." But read "Ice Station" first to get the idea of the relationships between the chatacters. Reilly sometimes doesn't write in sci-fi but he writes really fast-paced action thrillers, which are just as good (in my opinion). There's also "The Lab" by Jack Heath, but you might find it slightly childish, in comparison to Matthew R.
  • If you like science fiction check out the godfather of the genre - Isaac Asimov.
  • Don't forget his early books were published under the name he used prior to 1975, John Lange, if you can find any of those still available.
  • Check out the science fiction books section on Mania.com. It's got great reviews, synopses, and the latest happenings of the sci fi world.
  • I'm pretty sure the Author's name is Terry Brooks and I've seen his books get checked out quite a bit. As well as customer's placing holds on them. A lot depends too, on the type of Science Fiction, that you like. After all they have different styles.
  • Has anybody mentioned Arthur C. Clarke?
  • Robert Jordan's "Wheel Of Time" series is a good read. Loved it!
  • i'm into robert jordon, george rr martin and kathrine kerr. epic fantasy but all worth a read.
  • I see several people have recommended "golden age" writers such as Heinlein & Asimov-how about A E Van Vogt:his "World of Null A" & "Pawns of Null A" were about Korzybsky's non-Aristotelian logic.
  • robert heinlein has great ones such as "starship troopers, to sail beyond the sunset, and of course the famous stranger in a strange land. the book brave new world is pretty awesome and made me think about free speech and thought alot. but by far my favorit writer of sci-fi is Ray Bradbury. he has over 300+ short stories and also some novels. My favorite one is the Illustrated man which is a collection of some of his best short stories.
  • I highly recommend author John Wyndham. He has more poetic and chilling ways to potentially end the world than any author I've read. [ My favorite Wyndham work is his " The Midwich Cuckoos." And with possibly the best book title ever, you just have to go read it. :) ]
  • Ludlum is a sci-fi author? Okay. Try Frank Herbert.
  • How has Orson Scott Card not been mentioned? Timothy Zahn is pretty entertaining, too.
  • Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke & Ray Bradbury are excellent.
  • Edgar Rice Burroughs, John Carter of Mars. I had the whole series in college and I don't know what happened to them.
  • Check out Iain M Banks - Start with The Player of Games, or Consider Phlebus, totally mind-blowing.
  • Lots of great answers here. I like Crichton too - am in the middle of State of Fear now....kinda slow going though. Willliam Gibson Ursula K Leguin
