Blame the media.
When I think of poverty and disease I think of third world countries with low GDP. Outside of Northern and Southern Africa, the rest of the countries are pretty damn poor.
That is not to say that the people aren't great, or that the countries aren't gorgeous, or even that they are not happy - it just means that they are poor.

Cuz that's what the news reports. Wars generally escalate the worst in poorer areas(which get covered the most) disease, etc. Now all the chill Masai and other tribes and peoples kickin it and being happy just doesn't make for an exciting headline. They're lucky if they get some mention on the discovery channel.
Now myself, I am so immersed in cheetah land that it's all I think about when I think of Africa :)
Telling people Africa is progressing? That's like telling people back in the stone ages the world is round

but surely if people are visiting africa they are eduvated enough to know that it isnt poor... a friend of mine recently visited the capital and came home distressed because they had "such poor living conditions" in a 4* hotel?!!??!?!?!?!?!
its wierd that people can be soooo influenced by the media that what they see for their own eyes is seen through tinited specs!

The media shows only certain countries, like Darfur. And if you watch some movies, like Blood Diamond and Black Hawk Down, it's easy to believe the entire continent is in trouble. I had a co-worker who visited South Africa and he loved it.
