I live in Virginia as well, and I've been looking for a specific provison in state statutes that pertain to your question. I can't seem to find anything in terms of whether or not you have to pay her rent, but I've included a couple of links that will hopefully point you in the right direction: This first link is to the Virginia. gov page regarding housing regulations: http://www.vdacs.virginia.gov/consumers/f-landlord.shtml This link is to the Virginia Legal Aid, who can help you free of cost with legal questions http://www.vlas.org/ this last link is to the tenant/landlord regulations themselves. http://www.dhcd.virginia.gov/HomelessnesstoHomeownership/PDFs/Landlord_Tenant_Handbook.pdf Good luck!

You may want to go to the apartment complex where she lived and find the contract she signed. If it states in the contract as such, then so be it. But if there is no clause stating or pertaining to what should happen is a tenant dies, you are off the hook. good luck.

Ok so this may sound bad on my part. Did she have money in her estate left to you? If not then good luck on them to collect. If so they can go after the money she left you. Once her belongings are out of the home and you turn in keys again good luck on them to get the money.

If I were you, I would tell them to that's too bad...because they're not getting a dime. Heartless idiots!

I believe that even in the Commonwealth of Virginia, death terminates any lease signed by the deceased. Move her belongings out of the apartment and tell them to send her a bill if they have a forwarding address.
