  • FIELDING AVERAGE
Tells how well a player fields his position.

    Formula: Putouts + assists/putouts + assists + errors

Calculate: To calculate fielding percentage add the number of putouts and assists and divide by the total of putouts, assists and errors. Fielding percentage is calculated to 3 decimal places and is dependent on putouts, assists and errors.

Putout: A fielder gets a batter out by catching a fly ball, tagging the runner or forcing the runner at a base.

Assist: A player fields a ball and throws to a base or catches a ball at a base to get the runner out.

Error: A fielder misplays a batted or thrown ball and allows the runner to advance safely.

Analysis: It is important to note that fielding percentage varies by position. Be sure to compare a first baseman's fielding average with those of other first basemen, not with statistics for outfielders or even for second basemen.
