  • Losing toes definitely does affect balance. I know for sure that the Big toe is about the most crucial for balance, a Freind of mine lost his Big toe and some of his foot, and practically had to learn how to walk again. He still to this day cannot walk backwards at all. My logic says that the outer toes would be most important for balance, so a Big toe or a Pinky toe are both significant int heir effect on balance. I also think the big toe is more crucial than the Pinky, but the pinky is still more crucial than the second or fourth toes, and so on. http://www.actapress.com/PaperInfo.aspx?PaperID=31241&reason=500 http://www2b.abc.net.au/science/k2/stn/archives/archive35/newposts/261/topic261159.shtm http://www.gentili.net/amputations/toe_amputations.htm EDIT: Actually, It may depend on the person's foot structure, and walking style. Watching my toes as I adjust my balance, my fourth toe does a lot of work, as its significantly longer and stronger than my pinky which seems to do almost nothing. My Pinky toes are pretty pathetic little things. Hope that answers your question!
  • The big one, not only balance, you will not be able to walk to your gf, house.
  • They DO help, but my problem with balance (standing) came when I not only lost them all, but fell and tore up my knee. 2 months before surgery was done, 1 week in the hospital, 6 weeks in a rehab hospital, 6 weeks or so in a hospital bed at home, and just enough rehab to where I can bend my knee 90 degrees or so did more to screw with my balance than anything. I can walk, but am more comfortable with a cane, and I'm not supposed to walk too much (doctor's orders) or I get sores on my feet that take forever to heal. The months OFF my feet, and not being ALLOWED to walk that much has kept my balance screwed up. I use a wheelchair at home, and a scooter outside of home. (I walk the wheelchair around, so DO move my feet and legs, without very much pressure on my feet.) First toes I lost were right foot, little toe and the one next to it. I don't really remember the order after that, but big toes were last. I was walking within days/hours of each surgery. (Neuropathy can be a wonderful thing, at times.)
