i'm on the thyroid medication and the doctor told me that i needed to take it for the rest of my life. I dont think you can get rid of this naturally without the doctors order. why dont you consult your doctor? did your doctor tell you that this is temporary or that you have to take it all the time?

I think I might have had low thyroid production due to my diet. It has been several years and I eat much better. If i want to try to go without the meds (low dose of Armour) should I go to half dose for a month and then end or just go cold turkey?

    Thanks.

Lots of exercise will help you to increase your metabolism and if you are determined to come off your meds, there are options like Armour (only in the US) but a lot of thyroid sufferers swear by certain herbal supplements that they claim help them to lose weight and feel better generally.

There's plenty of info on the net. I can recommend a book I read about the weightloss and remedies - an ebook (link below) and also a book about hypothyroidism by Mary Shomon which I got at Amazon. That's also full of facts and stats.

The reason you have to take the thyroid medication is that there is something wrong with your thyroid and the synthroid (or other medicine) takes over for your thyroid. If you stop taking it, the same condition that caused you to take the medication would start again. If you are hypothyroid (low thyroid function) you would become very tired, have dry skin and hair, and other symptoms. If you are hypothyroid, you might have strange symptoms, eyes bulge out, quick and unsafe weight loss. Why give up this medicine? It's not expensive and many people take it. Generic is about $10 per month.
