... The magnetic field "emerges" from the north pole, and loops round to the south pole. However, this is actually "arbitary", as we can not directly percieve field lines. These are human concepts. The magnetic field drops off to the r^3, if I remember correctly, and as such, the closer you are the stronger you are.... think of it as "spreading out" away from the poles. The path loops back round itself.... E.g. all magnets occur in dipoles, and there is no evidence yet for a magnetic monopole. Do your own homework
