It is important to learn to see things from a perspective other than your own. Language is only the first step.

Fortunately, learning another language can be fun, and using it can be rewarding.

I think it is, only because with all the immigrants coming in the country, we don't have a clue what they are saying. But then if you are migrating to another country have the decent to use their language.

You should know the language of the country you are in. If youlive and stay in America, speak English. If you plan a trip or move to, say, France, learn French. If you go to a place and can't speak the native language, that is your problam and not the natives. You should adapt, not everyone else. So, for me, no, I won't learn another language simply because I'll never go to a place where it would be necessary to learn a second language. If you come to America and can't speak English, don't get upset with me.

YES! When you learn a foreign language you learn so much more than just how to order food and find a bathroom. You learn about your own culture and the inner heart and language of another country. It's like the difference between only hearing one kind of music your whole life vs. having a job sampling music for itunes!

It is very important now, and its importance is rising. Today, we find ourselves functioning on more of a global level instead of a national level. International tourism and immigration are becoming more common as emphasis on keeping everything in our respective countries is lessening.

yes the benefits are immense - no matter what the language. you learn the culture, the people, the language, often the music and personality of their way of life, you become able to learn their literature and history
    it opens doors for jobs
it opens minds and frees them of ignorance
it opens possibilities for the future aspect of travel

true you may not be hurt in life if you don't. but i've learned one other than english, become very well acquainted w italian, and learning arabic, and eventually russian [already can read that] i can pretty much promise you'll be so happy and proud of yourself that you did
