You're reading I have a 97 Grand Am. It ran fine when I put it in garage. Now I went to start it up and it starts for 2 seconds then dies, i tried full throttle, 1/2 throttle, start fluid and cant get it to stay on. New fuel filter and clean plugs- no change.

The security light was flashing and I did what you suggested and it stopped flashing but it still is doing the same thing. It starts for only a second unless I floor it then it rev to 2000rpm and dies within 2 seconds. Please help.

If the light is back on and flashing you may have a bad key or a problem in the security system. There is a way to bypass the system by cutting a wire and installing a switch. You can also try another key to see if that helps. Try the learn procedure again but after the light stops flashing turn the key off and wait at least 20 seconds.

The light is not flashing anymore. But the rest of the symptoms are the same.

I forgot to mention that I had to replace the speedometer because it wasn't working don't know if that has anything to do with this problem or not.

Yes, that is the root of your problem. The Instrument Panel Controller (IPC) is part of the security system. Try the learn procedure again but after the light stops flashing turn the key off and wait at least 20 seconds. The new IPC or the cars ECM may need to be programmed for the engine to run. If the Engine Control Module (ECM) doesn't recognize the IPC it won't let the engine run. It thinks someone is trying to bypass the security system.

Thanks for all the help I really appreciate it.

Take the new speedometer out, put the old one back in and then go through the 10 minute key learn procedure if it won't start. You will have to have a dealership hook up a scan tool and program the new IPC and ECM for the new cluster to work.
