  • Usually, every four years. This year, 2004 is a leap year. The next one will be 2008. However, years divisible by 100 are not leap years, except if the year is divisible by 400. The year 2000 was a leap year, but 1900, 1800 and 1700 were not.
  • The time taken for the earth to travel round the sun is 365 and a quarter days. It would be impractical to have quarter of a day, so it is saved up till the end of the fourth year and added to the shortest month, which is February of course. A leap year can be identified, as it is always divisible by 4, ie if you can divide by 4 and have nothing remaining, then it is a leap year. There are many debates about leap years, such as when to celebrate a birthday if you are born on Feb 29, or how old you really are. On this day, it is also traditional for women to propose marriage to men!
  • 97 times every 400 years. Years ending with 00 are leap years if the first two digits are divisible by four. All other years are leap years if the last two digits are divisible by four. So usually every four years, but 1900, 2100, 2200, 2300, 2500, etc are exceptions, because they are NOT leap years.
