Someone before mentioned Runescape is a good one. I'll give it some props. Yes, it is fun... Until you're tired of graphics that're worse than N64. Runescape is free, which is a plus, but, World of Warcraft is simply a much better game. However, it's expensive.

Personally, I love Second Life. It's not a "game" so much as an online community for everything from socializing to business. They also have groups in world you can join that create some pretty interesting, more traditional RPGs.

www.runescape.com and www.baneworld.com although RuneScape restricts what you can do unless you buy a subscription. Baneworld doesn't restrict you and you don't need to download anything but it plays a lot like an installed game. World of Warcraft is a program you buy/install and can then play online paying each month, not a website/game really.
