Simplified answer - they are allowed to eat fallen fruits.

(Maybe the answer became less simple than intended)

This is repeated somewhat in my comment below but bears saying, particularly regarding the thinly veiled snobbery about what branch is supposedly more disciplined than another. The forest monks are nearly always situated near a village or other community that can support them. Very few if any are actually in the forest as it were. The name has stuck but most are in settled viharas near villages or towns. As for one branch being more disciplined than another - that's largely only something that those who have not lived in a Theravadin monastic community would say, as differences in discipline between branches, or even between different monasteries of the same branch are pretty much on the surface only. Underneath, Dhamma is Dhamma and no one branch is necessarily more disciplined than another. I am a little confused at your profile though - for example saying that there is no Theravadin monk in Mexico City when I know of one who comes regularly, and asking questions to which you are getting somewhat inaccurate replies on here when apparantly you are in contact with a Theravadin monk who could answer them for you within minutes. Surely it would be better to ask someone who can give you a reliable response, rather than someone who really is not perhaps qualified to answer?

They are supported by the lay community, as are all Theravadin monks and nuns. They don't just hope to survive on fallen fruit. Beyond that, the practice itself shows you that you have what it takes.

Habit is as limiting as habit. When you are able to recognize a desire and not follow it, you have more freedom, not less.
