I assume you are asking about the Barry Allen Flash, who was instrumental in deafeting the Anit-Monitor and thus preventing the complete destruction of all the mulitverse. I'll make this relatively brief, rather than recounting the entire Crisis on Infinite Earths, which can easily be obtained at your local comic shop. Flash was being held and tortured by the Psycho Pirate, who was being used by the Anit-Monitor to manipulate the emotions of various heroes. Upon Flash's escape, he destroyted the Anti-Matter cannon, that the Anti-Monitor was building, by creating a reverse temporal vortex around it. In doing so, he regressed back to the moment when he was originally hit by the Speed Force (in the form of lightening), and his life ended. Only the heroes who were present at the beginning of the new universe are aware of the existence of the Barry Allen Flash and the sacrifice he made to save the universe. After the Crisis, Wally West, Flash's sidekick, took on the mantle of The Flash. Jay Garrock, the Golden age Flash of Earth-2, found his history merged along with every other hero (like Alan Scott, the Golden Age Green Lantern) present at the new begining. To the average person on Earth, there was no transition from Barry Allen to Wally West, and Jay Garrick had always been present on Earth.
