  • You're doing great. 6 to 8 , 8-oz. glasses a day is what you need. That would be 6 to 8 cups a day. You are drinking 8 cups a day, and thus are getting the recommended water. If you are thirsty, then drink more, if you drink more coffee, replace that. You want do want to drink 1 cup for each 15 minutes of exercise. However, by and large, most people don't drink as much as you're drinking a day. (Is your bro-in-law? ;) ).
  • I don't think drinking freezing water is good for your kidneys -- you're already burning calories in a workout, now you're burning more heating up the water you just drank. Drinking too much water leaches minerals out of your body... so if you're drinking 8 cups a day, consider drinking less, and consider adding mineralized supplements like Emergen-C. Also -- I would boil the water for 2 minutes first -- tap water has chloramine in it, which kills friendly bacteria in your stomach, and water in plastic bottles *probably* has residue from the plastic, so just use a metal or ceramic container. (I say *probably* because the plastic bottle industry will tell you otherwise, and most people believe them).
  • I'll share what my doc explained to me. You really get most of your water needs from the foods you eat...the 8 glasses a day isn't usually neccessary for the average person. The way he explained it was if you are urinating at least once in 6 hours and your urine is a 'light' yellow color (not bright) you are probably getting enough water. And obviously if you are thirsty then drink :)
  • Your brother in law is correct, you need to drink more to replenish the amount you sweat away, but probably another 8 ounces would be sufficient. And don't worry about leaching minerals out of your body...You're not going to harm yourself drinking water unless you consume MASSIVE quantities (like 4 or 5 gallons a day). And while tap water may not be the best solution, it is miles better than any processed drink (including tea and coffee).
  • I drink 4 cups a day, but I use a 32 oz cup. Get a water filter for your tap water. The under the sink ones are the best.
  • The standard is six eight ounce "glasses" or bottles of water for an average person with moderate activity during the day. This "standard" cannot be used by people who are very active, especially outdoors in summer. It will always vary, with activity and from person to person. Best bet is to keep plenty of water handy and drink when you feel the need. Your body is the best judge. It will tell you when you need fluids. And no fluid is better than good clean water.
