What direction are the ridges? Doctors say that vertical ridges are somewhat common. They can be caused by a multitude of things~ environmental, nutritional, age, hereditary etc. Horizonal ridges on the other hand, if not caused by trauma or a short term illness or nutritional deficiency could indicate a more serious underlying illness & should be brought to the attention of your doctor.

  • I would check with your doctor. Nail abnormailities that do not occur beacuse of trauma can be a sign of illness.

I assume you are asking about significant ridging. There are a number of transitory, chronic and congenital causes. Provided the ridges do not cause pain or sensitivity, simply buffing them out solves the aesthetics. If pain or sensitivy occurs, you can do a bit of quick research to identify what might be the source, and the forms of treatment

Good question. I do know that they grow from underneath. I damaged a thumbnail once. It was amazing how it died and fell off and a new one grew. The ridges on my thumbnails seem to grow with small segmations. Could this be a history of one's health?
