    Current Canadian pennies are only 4.5 % copper. The rest is steel and nickel.

    Apparently 4.5%. I have a Canadian penny from 1859. That doesn't answer your question. I just wanted to brag :)

    It gets better... 1942-1977 are worth (copper content 12-13-2007) US$0.0209 per penny. 1978/79 = US$0.0208. 1980/81 = US$0.0179. 1982-96 =US$0.0160. (saw it on http://www.coinflation.com/canada/ )
