You have to be careful with costume jewelry because it is a relatively inexpensive base metal that has been coated by a thin layer of gold or silver. Once that layer of gold or silver comes off, then the base metal will start to expose itself.

Thus, if you see a design that you really like, then I suggest getting it in sterling silver or gold.

Or, you can try to minimize the coating coming off. You can do so by taking the jewelry off when showering, doing the dishes, using hairspray, etc. Also, when you are doing any type of labor with your hands.

    I hope this helps.

this works for gold and silver so may help.
line a small flat bottom dish with aluminium foil shiny side up. In a glass or plastic jug put one calgon tablet calcium remover type. (not the dishwasher type) Add two large tablespoons of washing soda crystals and pou on 1/2 -3/4 pint of boiling water. Stir til disolves and then drop jewellery 1 piece at a time onto the aluminium foil. swish for 5 seconds and remove. mind you dont burn yourself..I suggest plastic tongs as you cant see the item as the mix is slightly frothy and opaque. The item should be spotless after removed and rinsed in plain water. While the mix is frothy it works so you should be able to clean loads of stuff if you get organized in advance. Try a test on a throwaway item as I give no guarantees although it has not harmed my gold.
    Hope this helps

once you've cleaned it (don't rub too hard or the colour will come off) coat the jewellry with clear nail varnish laquer. It will stop it discolouring.

Another way is to rub it in some kind of sand or dirt. You can also use toothpaste. Scrubbing is the key

Get a damp papertowel and rub some ciggerett or cigar ash on it then rub it into the jewelry in a circular motion then polish with a soft rag.
