  • They do.
  • They do the "polar" routing but common sense dictates that they follow more of the jet stream (that's why it is usually 1 hour faster going east from USA) plus they like to be within a certain distance of land at all times for a safety factor.
  • shortest isn't always the fastest or most fuel efficient. They usually use the upper winds in the calculation as well..and in the case of America to Asia..they may try to avoid Russian Airspace..(at least a few years ago--may still be true)..Russia would only allow 2 foreign aircraft in their airspace at any one time.
