Are there any leash laws in your area? Was the cat on your property when the dog started chasing it? Did he come on your property to chase your cat?

I am almost positive that you would be able to sue for damages. I see this kind of thing on Judge Judy ALL the time.

Kdmichaels is right. In some states, cats are legally not supposed to be outdoors. In that kind of situation, you are out of luck. This is why my cats are indoor cats.

I don't think it sounds good. The cat is considered personal property and it doesn't sound like your cat was at your home, but across the street. It could be said that you didn't have control of your personal property.

I live in CA. My cat usually hangs out in front of the house when she is out. I don't know where she was when the dog attacked. I just know where she ended up. The owner rang our doorbell and told us her dog attacked our cat.

Laws vary world wide ... it will depend on the exact laws of your area ... ask a local lawyer, many places do have applicable laws that would allow a law suit to both cover medical costs and psychological trauma to you ... as well as legal costs ... in other words, the dog owner pays (or reimburses) your vet bill, your shrink bill, and your lawyer bill, but probably nothing left over for your pocket.

yea. you can sue anybody at anytime for any reason for ny amount

Most likely. Most jurisdictions require that a dog be on a leash, but not a cat. Thus, if the cat was attacked in some place other then the dog owners yard, you most likely have a cause of action.
