What's the best way to decide which engineering field to go into? Will being a girl cause any problems for me getting into the field?

In what topic are you most interested? Robots? Machines? Then probably you'd want mechanical engineering. Computers? Software? Hardware? Computer engineering or software engineering. Biology? Humans? Animals? Bacteria? Biomedical engineering. Bridges? Buildings? Civil engineering. As for your gender, it'll only stop you if you let it. There are many female engineers at the top engineering schools.

You won't really need to decide on a field until late sophomore or early junior year. And many times the actual field is not as important as the Eng degree. My brother, who graduated a civil engineer, works as an environmental engineer. As far as being female, there should be no problem getting job offers as companies are really trying to diversify gender-wise in engineering. Whether there will be any workplace problems are more difficult to predict.
