your question is good, to have any filtering of air it is better to breathe out of your nose for lightly dusty conditions,on the other hand breathing out of your mouth is better to get lots of air into your lungs when your are engaging in sports, this depends on how cold it is if you are breating lots of cold air in the winter i.e. snowshoing x-counry sking,it is very important to know the temperature if are competing in a cold place it is better to breathe thru your nose the best you can.at the canada witer games last year some biatholon copetitons were cacelled.it was minus 35celsius .think of a turbo, better yet a blower, it blows more air into the engine and thus making the car go faster, same goes for geting air to all the working muscles you get more air by breathing thru your mouth the biggest and best path of least resistance wind pipe of your esphagas. as for the nasal pasages there is alot of restriction, thus in cold weather there is more time to warm cold air by breathing through your nose, and less likly of hurting your lugs breathing in freezing oxygen

It is better to breath through your nose.

Air passing through the nose is warmed to body temperature faster. This is the case because

    1. The air has farther to travel

    2. It travels over mucosal tissue which is warmer

    3. The turbinates in the nose provide more surface area for air to contact

Another reason is because the mucosal secretions (mucous) trap particles and prevent them from getting into the lungs where they could pass into the body systemically and potentially cause infection.

Furthermore, the immune cells in the nasal passages sample the air and by causing sneezes, excess mucous secretion, and swelling alert the body to potentially harmful environmental particles.

Additionally, you are less likely to spread contagious airborn microbes to others.

Breath through your nose -- please, just don't snore!

The nose. You should breathe through your nose as opposed to your mouth because the the nostrils and sinuses filter and warm the air going into the lungs. The mouth breather bypasses this. Mouth breathing also speeds up water loss increasing possible dehydration.

Your nose is made to catch debris and microscopic things. The mucus and nose hairs actually serve a purpose. the mucus keeps the path to the lungs and throat warm and wet so you stay healthier.

Your nose. You don't get a sore or dry throat and your mouth doesn't get dry.

However, if your nose is stuffed up, breath through your mouth so you breath!

Nose. For instance: Eli Manning breathes through his mouth. Tom Brady breathes through his nose. Let's see who wins the Super Bowl.

If you have a lung conditon or need to get more Oxygen to your tissues then you need to breath through your mouth, you are able to take deeper breaths and bring in more air. And if you do a breath hold after taking a deep breath of 2-3 seconds, it gives the gas exchange a little more time, thereby giving your tissues more Oxygen. Obviously Eli Manning gets it right! He knows that his muscles need more oxygen to perform better. But your nose is a filtration and humidification system, so under normal circumstances, nose is best.
