  • believe it or not...air travel is the cheapest. Cheaper than bus or train..and no motel/hotel bills or meals.
  • hitch hike or jump a trian. eat out of dumpsters. it's called a freegan. they never eat food that cost anything. this country is so wastefull you can eat out of a dumpster and still be ok. some food is still bagged up and others don't even hit the dumpster if you get there at the right time.
  • if you travel like a illegal mexican you can spend around $200-$400 from maine to california
  • $47 total. The trip is 1084 miles and will take 18 hours driving. Figure on three meal stops, and bring your own peanut butter sandwiches. For $1000, buy a small used motorcycle that gets 70 MPG. Once you get to Chicago, sell the motorcycle for the same price you got it. Don't even register the bike... just hand the new owner the pink slip from the previous owner. 15.5 gallons of gas will cost you $47, and that's your entire cost!
  • Houston to Chicago is not exactly cross-country and presuming you have someone in Houston to take you to the airport and someone in Chicago to pick you up,check Southwest Airlines webfares. For $94 (plus fees) midweek you can fly in 2 hours 20 minutes the 1,000+ miles.
