They adopted the alternative Pink Floyd after they were playing a concert with another name by that name. Pink Floyd comes from the first name of two blues musicians Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. At one Australian press conference in the mid 70s they were asked "Which one of you is Pink"? I have attached sources for your reference.
