From time to time (perhaps once a month so I'm not afraid of going to sleep) I wake up but usually it's in the night. I feel like I'm outside of the box of my life for a moment and see my past and current life situation with ugly clarity, terror washes through my body and I feel outside and unconnected. I feel it all very suddenly without conscious thinking. Within a couple of minutes the terror is gone and I'm left with an unease and then start thinking normally about it.

I don't know what it is but I can identify with many of the emotional and mental symtoms of a panic attack and a couple of the physical ones described in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panic_attack

Day to day I feel fine although I do have some things to sort out (still finding my way). Maybe it's stress from taking things seriously and being fearful and feeling I'm making too many mistakes, or triggered by a nightmare (though I don't seem to recall having one when this happens).

As a therapist I would need more information about how long this has been happening to you and more about the severity of the symptoms. Pease seek medical attention.
This could be the relsut of a medical problem or a mental health issue. This sense of terror needs attention in order for you to feel better.

No i don't but i think if you do that maybe you have some issues that you need to think about, to clear your head. Maybe?

Not terror.I do always wake up wishing it wasn't another day, and hoping that it won't be as bad as the day before.
