The definition of a DVI connector includes a whole bunch of pins. Different sets of pins are used for different things. One set of pins is defined to carry analog signals rather than digital picture signals. If a connector does not implement the analog pins, it is a DVI-D (D for digital) connector.
Connectors on video cards often have both the digital and analog signal pins so an adapter can be used to drive monitors which have only analog input.
