Just like all purchases on eBay its all down to trust. When you receive the artwork take it to a professional art dealer and he should be able to tell you if its a fake or not. If its a fake and was claimed to have been an original by the seller then email them and try to arrange some kind of compensation. If that does not work contact eBay and they should help you. Also, use some common sense, you wont buy an original Michelangelo for 2.99! :)

First of all, I'd check the seller's feedback. I never buy from anyone who doesn't have a lot of good feedback. And I always look at the negative feedback they have, if it's petty stuff (the occasional "shipping was slow") then I'll buy from them. I've never bought art on ebay though. I'd guess the only way to really know would be to have it checked out after you receive it. I wouldn't think anything really valuable would be sold on ebay, but at a reputable art auction.

Check the sellers feedback! If he is selling counterfeit Art he will have some bad feedback, I personally wouldn't buy a high dollar item from a new seller without feedback.

only buy from galleries.

I wouldn't buy art from eBay if I were you! There are a lot of scammers on eBay, and a friend of mine got screwed over himself. Personally, when I buy art, I need to look at it, touch it, examine it for its quality. But, if you're going to buy art online, there are many reputable sites such as https://www.artfulhome.com. You might not get low prices as you would on eBay, but it would be safer.
