No definitive answer as it depends on the efficiency of the laptop, and how you use it. The more powerful the machine (Dual core, gigs of RAM, huge bright screen etc.) the greater the drain. I have a small, lightweight laptop, medium spec, that does between 3 and 5 hours depending on use and configuration. If you shut down everything you don't need (wireless adaptors, IRDA ports etc.) and configure the Windows power settings for maximum battery, and run your screen on dim with a fast screen-off option then you will maximize you run time. Check the battery too. The highest power density chemistry is Lithium ion or Lithium polymer; the larger the capacity (the Ah rating on the battery info plate) the longer it will run. Word-processing uses a fraction of the computer (and battery) power than that of a huge CPU/video hungry game. Although an expensive option, you double your run time with a spare battery!
