Funny, I used to have the same problem and heard the whackiest theories in that regard. I started buying Seiko watches about 30 years ago and that put a stop to the problem. They're great watches!

My father and I both have the same problem, so it's probably genetic, whatever it is. Since we corrode the stainless steel backs right off the watches, I assume it's the result of just the right (or wrong) combination of salt, water, and electrolytes in our sweat. My father found that watches with a gold or platinum back were unaffected. These are a little pricy, and if you don't feel like shelling out that kind of cash you can always try sterling silver.
