  • Possible? I say tentatively yes. There are processes to reduce nearly everything into "ash" that ash can be super heated to "melt" to become a glass/ceramic material. However "trash" is a very broad term applied to anything and everything we humans discard in the road of life. there are many things one would not want to super heat or convert into ash due to toxicity issues. Plastics are the big one, heavy metals are another, mercury is another. Recycling (taking materials out of trash and reusing them) is actually the best way to go. That removed the bulk of the material. glass, plastic, metal are huge contributors to "trash". Of course its easier to recycle out of "fresh" trash at home... instead of "mining" landfills. There are a few experiments being ran today on how to effectively and safely "mine" old landfills for their wealth of recyclable materials. There are still too many hazards and dangers (not only to the workers, but one wrong move can lead to ground water contamination, toxic releases of gasses - its not pretty) so we can not hope for a land-fill mining process in the near future.
