I can't make that decision. Since humans are animals, I could go with my Mom, my Wife, or I could head down the non-human animal path, and that opens a whole can right there. Both dogs we've had were Daddy's (me) kids, we've had many cats, and some of them were my little buddies, some were my wife's. There is only one that I think disliked me (he was an uber Mommy's boy).
-
My long-haired miniature dachshund, Darcy.

My Cocker Spaniel, Benjamin. He died last summer and I miss him a lot. Whenever I would cry, he would cuddle up next to me and try to lick my tears away. Then he would just lay with his head on my shoulder with that "I'm sorry you're sad" look. I had 13 great years with him.

One of the cats I have now. He thinks he must be cuddled in my arms or right next to me on the bed, ALL THE TIME. I can barely type because he digs his claws into me when he starts to slip. But he's so darn cute I can't resist him. The other cats are able to entertain themselves--I'd never get any peace if they all were so needy!

A dog named Drew, he was half labrador retriever and half great dane, far more loving than most people I have come across. I loved that dog, and he loved me. He got cancer and I paid a lot of money to have the tumor cut off his ribs at Texas A&M Animal Science Center, even though they told me it was hopeless. He did well for a few months and it came back. They said there was nothing more they could do. He was is extreme pain, and I knew I should end his misery but I could not. I had my pistol to his head in my back yard and I could not pull the trigger. I just could not do it. I sat there with his head in my lap for hours. He died at about 3AM and I have not been sadder other than the day my dad died.
-
we used to have a rat named Bruce. He couldn't have been any sweeter. All the dogs we have ever had are great too. And the cat we have now, Kilala (my brother named her), she'll follow you everywhere and always wants to be in your lap.

A white cat that was cross-eyed and also part Siamese or something like that. It wouldn't stay off my lap when I sat down. I had to give him away when I moved into a place where I couldn't have pets
