    Relevant backlinks from good PR ranked sites.

    Clean semantic code that Google can read easily.

    Key word research which is then used to build good quality, readable content, not a pile of hidden keywords stuffed into the page.

    Headings used properly.

    Title and Description present and correct

    Correct Doctype

    Google XML sitemap.

    Andesine has given an excellent comment above.

    Also, be sure to see that your website pages have plenty of quality content, and that the words for which you would like your site to be found are repeated a few times in the content, but not too many of them either! Use synonyms where possible too. I also don't use flash or include too many images. Search engine spiders look for text not images.
